I meant to say particulate filter. Both the cheap washable filters and the big media filters are "particle filters"They really make the air cleaner. The higher the MERV, the more effective the filtration.
If you live in New York City, then you may have experienced the Canadian wildfires last year. Without a particle filter, you wouldn't have been able to run your HVAC fan to clean the air.
Mitsubishi calls it an "air filter" in the manual. It only removes hair, dust, and other very large particles that would make the coil dirty and cause a blockage. It only protects the equipment, not the homeowner.
It does not remove PM2.5, which is what made air quality bad in New York City in the summer of 2023. Fine particulate matter that is 2.5 microns or smaller is bad for your lungs, and PM2.5 is what high-MERV particulate filters will remove.
