If you can find a place that refurbishes laptops and gives them to homeless people, you can donate the laptops. Otherwise, it’s all ewaste.
I take the drives out and stick them in a drawer. When I have a drawer full, I have an external connector that I use to hook them up to my laptop to wipe. I’ve tried to physically destroy them before, but they are not easy to damage.
One time when I was moving and didn’t have time to deal with it, I found my local UPS store would send them to a shredder for a small fee. Not sure if they all do that, but that one did. That’s probably the best for most people.
