If the drain is clogged well past the P-trap, then coming from the vertical "vent" pipe that it attaches to is something to try. I reached ours through the attic (not the roof top) by just cutting the exposed part with my PVC cutting tool (you could use a hacksaw), then rejoining the cut after the clog was cleared.
OTOH, maybe you have a few things that you want a plumber to fix for you, so calling one is not a bad option.
