Personal Finance (Not Investing) • Career Advice: Finish CFA and get new job or get Pension from current employer??

Hi Bogleheads,

I'm contemplating a career change and hoping maybe some of you could help me. I'm currently employed in a government job and have 12.5 years till retirement. Upon reaching full retirement I can collect a ~$80k pension (In today's dollars) and will get full health coverage. I would be 46 years old and I think a small COLA would kick in when I turn 55.

However, I dislike my current job. I get little satisfaction from it, there are poor working conditions, and I am commuting about an hour and 15 minutes each way to get there and back. I make about 160K with overtime.

OR

I am considering switching into the investment management industry:

I have an undergraduate degree in Finance and have completed the first two levels of the C.F.A. Charter. I have no work experience in the field and was wondering what a reasonable start in it might look like? What kind of salary potential is there? I would finish the third part of the CFA & probably get the CPA too. I would even consider law degree if I could benefit from it.

Does switching this late in the game sound crazy? Does anyone with experience in the field have an opinion for me?

Any input is appreciated.

Thanks!
