Somewhat similar situation. Not my highest earning year but in very well paying job which will be impossible to replace once the gig ends. Early 50s as well. I just bought yesterday a very nice car. Not crazy - but very nice. Why? My old truck was 13 years old and I know his is most likely the last time I would spend this much money on a car. Does it make financial sense? Absolutely not. Am I excited about it like a kid at Christmas? Absolutely.
