I am very pleased that we have saved in taxable for 30 years. The flexibility it will provide in our early (ish) retirement years is going to be awesome. The $2,000 IRA limit when I started wasn’t going to get me anywhere. The $100 a month into taxable developed a great habit, and that habit has gotten us a long way.
We will do some Roth conversions because Roth dollars are also extraordinary, and our Roth accounts are way too low.
We are in a high marginal bracket so maxing out traditional 401k is an obvious first step, and quite valuable.
So, summarizing, I like all types of retirement accounts. Having a mix will allow us to manage our income in a variety of ways. So I try to encourage folks to save a lot, which automatically starts to get balances in all three major types.
