Thanks all - I wasn't sure if/how to respond but will say that this thread definitely seems to have brought out the inner mischief from many Bogleheads! (Timed grenades, mousetraps, creative misdirection, etc...
)
@Scubahogg: I'm not keeping my secrets from my husband. Since the letters in my possession are from a past love, the secrets in those letters - and there are many - are not mine to disclose.
I was a young, nerdy kid struggling to make sense of my feelings, and he was this arrogant, popular jock who seemed destined for great things. And somehow we crossed paths and fell in love. The best way I can describe it is that it's a story that matters to me, but not a story I want to share with others. When I hold those letters, powerful memories come flooding back. Hearing the crinkling of the paper as I unfold them and seeing his familiar cursive as I trace his words with my fingers was how I read them, and how I still read them now.
I was a little surprised that essentially no one would respect instructions to "destroy if dead." So I think I'll just rent a small and cheap safe deposit box and call it a day. He's married and somewhat famous now, and I don't think his wife will understand his past relationship with another guy. Although this was a long time ago, and it's extremely unlikely the letters will somehow find their way back to his family, this way I can be completely sure.
Thanks everyone.
