The drain cover was removed years ago. Looking down the drain, there's a cross-shaped metal structure. Is that supposed to be pulled? If so, I'd have the plumber do it since it's too easy to break stuff on an old fixture (see below).remove drain plug assembly.
That I had already done. Broke one of the screws in the process.remove overflow cover plate and assembly (2 screws)

I pulled out the linkages and all was clean.Use a grabber thingy to pickup all the hair and gunk
I plan to go the plunger route that you and others have mentioned. Then call a plumber for the snake if DIY fails.and/or
put stopper or rag over drain, fill tub, put wet rag in the overflow hole to plug that up, use a toilet pumper, pump drain line clear.
reassemble.
