Personal Finance (Not Investing) • Re: College and Insurance

I have 2 kids in state schools in Colorado. I think one is $3400/yr and the other is $2400/yr for the school insurance. The insurance has low max they will pay. Something like a few hundred thousand. We opt out because we have a PPO plan. I chose a PPO because I'm leery of HMOs and didn't know where my kids would go to college. I like the option of going to any doctor in any state. We pay extra for this, but that is what insurance is about. Paying to reduce risk.
PPO's have networks also. Sure you can go outside of network but you won't get close to the same reimbursement
Sure but there is a max out of pocket for out of network care. Go out of network, and one pays the whole thing. My brother got nailed by this during Covid. He got a several hundred thousand bill. I want to avoid having medical bills bankrupt us. A PPO does this much better than an HMO.
