Personal Consumer Issues • Re: Bad car rental experience: Fidelity CC to the rescue

Glad to see this post. Definitely have assumed a posture of assuming every rental car company is out to scam us. We rented twice last year during our trip to the Balkan peninsula. Once for 14 days in Croatia/Slovenia and another time for about 12 days in Greece. Both times we were notified of additional charges months later. We always video the car first and attempt to document obvious defects whilst pointing it out to the agent upon accepting the car and do the same upon return, although sometimes we are in a hurry and don't talk to the agent upon return at the airport. We travel for extended periods 3-5 times a year and have multiple rentals. About one time in two we get occasional bills for "tolls", "gas refill" although we always fill just before return, "damages", and they have even tried to hit us for "smoking" fees. All are within quotation marks to indicate that the charges are, from our perspective, erroneous or deceitful. You do you own math. Anyway, we always hop to disputing the charges through the credit card company and do not deal with the rental agencies, and never hear back again. I still expect one day that we will get on a blacklist somewhere, but it has not happened to date.

Addendum: we are not angels. 4-5 times in the last decade there have been damages to our rental that we have caused. Insurance takes care of it with minimal input. Cheers! :beer
