Just curious to learn from those who’ve already started their retirement journey if all the prep and planning and calculations turned out the way you envisioned? I’m 20 years out from retirement but spend countless hours trying to prepare for it, and wonder about the “who knew this would happen?” factor that you can’t really account for.
Several sad stories above my post, but mine is —so far— a good story:
Long before I ever heard of BH, I developed spreadsheets to track our assets, income, and projected pension and SS income. I’d update this quarterly, then less often. This exercise provided insight and discipline, and the knowledge that when we decided to retire, our standard of living would not be affected.
The major surprise following my retirement was that my wife continued to work longer than I anticipated. She received several promotions with huge salary increases during this time, which dramatically increased her “high three” thus making her retirement income well above all my projections.
We are healthy right now and don’t feel any financial limitations. We are fortunate that in our case, hard work was well-compensated.
I know that circumstance change…
Good luck in your journey.
