I think the most typical setup is:

* VTI (Total US Stock Market)

* VXUS (Total Intl Stock Market) - guidance is no less than 20% and no more than 40%

* BND (Total US Bond Market) or similar fixed income. BND is intermediate duration.

For my own self, I also include BNDX (Total Intl Bond Market). This is not common and many would say not needed.

Many people seek the "optimal" portfolio and spend a lot of time doing so. It's really not necessary...just keep it simple with an asset allocation that matches your risk tolerance and you will do great.

I have founds bonds to be more complex than stocks. If you are including any bonds / fixed income, I strongly encourage that you do so with a good understanding of what you are investing in. Quite a few people were surprised at how bonds performed during the recent bout of inflation...don't let that be you.
Thank you. I've asked this question from the perspective of a non-US investor (who also doesn't have a favorable US income or estate tax treatment). So those ETFs unfortunately aren't applicable to me AFAICT.

I agree about the bonds part. I don't understand them either (yet) and hence, I'm planning to keep them out of my portfolio for now. I've provided more details about my full portfolio in this question named "My portfolio: seeking advice (Turkey)".
