A few ideas? (Not an expert, just been there, done that)
Dumb question - is the gas line “on”, after the summer? Just double checking…if it has a shut off. Oil and propane tanks do. Sometimes it’s “off” after a fill or for whatever reason.
Does your furnace have a cad cell? It’s a photo cell detector that determines if a flame is going. If it doesn’t “see” a flame, then it shuts the system off.
We just moved to a house with an old oil furnace, (I know a bunch of you just had a mini fit Image may be NSFW.

I don’t want a heat pump, because I like warm air and I don’t want the new propane blend (I think it is?) refrigerant, and I prefer to not buy one again in 10 years when it craps out on us….a bunch of people in my family are on their 2nd round of replacement heat pumps. It’s cost about $1K per year to buy, if you do the math for the life of the unit. And no, they didn’t get the cheapest kind Image may be NSFW.

Anyway, the furnace wouldn’t stay on. Like you, we had space heaters to get by until we could decide what we wanted to do. One of the instructions from the serviceman (before he could get here) was to see if the cad cell was dirty and clean it with a qtip. Obviously, turning off the power and thermostat.
There’s also a possibility it could be the thermostat having a power issue, it tells your unit to “keep going” until it reaches temp in the room, if you haven’t done any remodeling or changed thermostats, then not too likely.
