Going on year 5 of home ownership since I made the original post. Net-net I'd say its a consumption item. I think my own answer to the question 5 years later is no, paying for rent is not "throwing away money". However, I don't think there is a way to answer this question with absolute certainty one way or the other. Just too many variables.
