The terms for waiving the account management fee have recently changed. Previously, you could avoid the fee by meeting any of the following:
Holding $50,000+ in assets with E*TRADE/Morgan Stanley
Having monthly direct deposits
Maintaining a $5,000+ balance in the checking account
However, under the new rules, the fee is waived only if you maintain a $5,000+ balance in the checking account.
The fee itself isn’t huge ($15), but I like to avoid unnecessary charges. This change might catch you off guard. I personally didn’t receive any email notifications about it, so I wanted to share the update here for anyone else who might not be aware.
