In investing the unexpected does happen from time to time. One can wordsmith truisms such as expect the unexpected or don't expect the expected, blah, blah. That is just how it is and it comes with the territory.
We can argue ad nauseam at semantic about massive (relatively speaking in the bonds world), let's just use 'unexpected'. People expect bonds to not follow the stock volatility. Well BND did lose more than Vanguard Growth ETF in 2022.
