I'm a bit of a water quality nerd. First thing I'd do is test and/or examine in detail your municipal water quality report. Do not trust the HD guy. I would go with this for testing: https://mytapscore.com/. Used them before for fluoride testing.
The issue I've heard about from NJ relatives is the PFAS levels are high. Activated carbon will remove this, but an alternative is just getting a water dispenser and bottle delivery. The disadvantage there may be the nanoplastics shed by the bottle itself and the cost vs. filtration. Do you have scale issues now? Water softeners are terrible for water heaters.
