Not directly responsive to your question, but feel obligated to post this.
Do not know who will be changing the batteries, but be very, very careful. I have dealt over the years with more patients than I care to remember who have suffered serious, and in some cases life altering/fatal, injuries related to falls from tall ladders.

We know of someone who was partially-paralyzed after falling off a ladder - cleaning gutters. His life was horribly altered. So was his wife's and kids'!
Please hire someone to move that smoke detector - or buy a better one.
Anything that keeps you (and your mom!) off an 8-12 foot ladder.
$150 is very reasonable for the misery (and the $$$) that might be saved!
