Best comfort/efficiency/noise/total cost of operation solution for us came from systems offered by Mitsubishi and Daikin. The Asian suitcase style variable speed blower and compressor systems, not their relabeled American-style cube systems.
Just one data point. Last year we installed two Bosch heat pumps for three zones for a leaky, 4500 sq ft, two story house.
"Suitcase style" units are side discharge units.

Asian mini-splits use side-discharge outside units because they're usually mounted to the wall. Sometimes they're installed on the balcony, but they still take up much less space than American-style cube-shaped top-discharge units.

The Bosch IDS is a scaled-up Asian mini-split in an American-style cube shape. The Bosch IDS is designed and manufactured by Midea. It's a very interesting design that does a lot of things differently from other heat pumps.
