One thing is that not everyone who goes on a path to get those degrees ends up being able to complete them. Hopefully one has a realistic idea of if they can complete the degree when they start, but I had a lot of friends who didn't make it through engineering school with me, and while large student loans aren't great, it's even worse when you've got the large loans and didn't get the degree. Usually, by the time you've figured out getting the degree is unlikely, you've already accumulated a few years of loans. Can someone explain to me how people get talked into a 6 figure student loan debt and not have a MD, DDS/DMD, or MBA/JD (from a top 10/20 school) at the end of it? Why does anyone think this is a good idea? I just don't get it.
