... WhatsApp - Meta (Facebook) can read you meta data - who you send messages to, when you send them, etc. If you believe them, they can't read the content.
Probably can't read the content, but access to the individual message content is beside the point. WhatsApp/Facebook/Meta now (after early 2021) enforces acceptance of its all-encompassing Terms of Service. This basically allows Facebook/Meta access to most of the contents of your phone, except for what Apple has buttoned up. And allows Facebook/Meta to actually USE the gathered data any way it chooses. Below are the mandatory Terms of Service (screenshots from my wife's iPhone in 2021). There is zero chance that I would ever allow Facebook/Meta access to this information in my phone. I truly cannot understand why anyone would knowingly agree to this:
