Superb…except for the Cancer. Sorry you’re going thru that and wish you a speedy recovery!

Mind sharing what you tried, what worked, didn’t work post quitting the corp tech job?
In no particular order…

Volunteer teaching programming to middle school kids. I discovered I didn’t agree with the teaching methodology the program used, and though I liked the kids, I didn’t find them that interesting, so the whole thing quickly became a grind.

Volunteer usher at various venues. I still do that, though not at every venue anymore.

Actually, I tried several volunteer activities, and realized that it needs to be fun. I’ve worked enough in my life.

Gym rat. I don’t love it, but I do it because it helps with my other health and fitness goals.

Various sports. The two I stuck with are tai chi and basketball. I stuck with those two because there is high level instruction and competition (in basketball) where I live. If I lived somewhere else, I’d probably be doing different sports. I tried other sports, including volleyball and tennis (both too hard on my arthritic hands), and pickleball (fun, but basketball takes up all my time).

Various art classes. I settled on printmaking, but since Covid, I’ve been doing it at home instead of in a class. And since cancer, I don’t want to expose myself to the chemicals they use in the studio. I miss the social part of it, so I might have to take a drawing class or something.

I’ve also at different times done some personal computer programming projects. The basketball league has an optimization engine backed scheduling app, for example, just because I was interested in the technology.

Also, we bought a motorhome, and spent 4-6 months per year traveling in it for 5 years. We were considering selling it when I got cancer. Getting cancer made the decision for us. I didn’t want my wife to be stuck with the thing.

I’m sure there’s several things I’ve forgotten.

Oh, yeah. We spent a year training to walk the Camino. Which was supposed to happen in April of 2020. Even while we were training, I knew that once we were done, I was not going to continue walking that many miles. It’s really time consuming. The friend I was going to go with eventually went and did it, and is still walking and hiking as her primary retirement activity. Everyone is different.
Thank you for the details.
Jobs/roles which are not daily seem more fun. Like the event usher role. Cheers and thanks again for sharing!
