Investing - Theory, News & General • Re: Total Return vs Dividends in Retirement

I looked at portfoliovisualizer to compare 75% VTI with 25% BND ( most around here consider 25% in bonds a kind of baseline) to a portfolio of 50% SCHD, and 50% VIG (dividend appreciation)>

The results speaks for themselves: The dividend portfolio returned 13 % and only suffered a worse year of 6.5%.

The VTI plus bonds only returned 10.9 while suffering a worst year of 17.9%.

This backs up what I have experienced over my 15 years of investing. I am in accumulation phase, and invest almost exclusively in dividend-paying stocks. My portfolio total return—including taxes—has matched the S&P 500. I’ve also never had a year where my dividend income has dropped. My dividend focus has not robbed me of any total return. To me, your real life data is more proof that a dividend-growth portfolio doesn’t lag in total return.
