Personal Finance (Not Investing) • Re: Vanguard App feature: depositing into Brokerage Account via “Mobile Check” photo

If you want to be really safe, deposit it into your local bank and then transfer the funds in. . .
I curious about just what are you needing to be "really safe" from?

A real risk might be losing/misplacing a check (and yes, I have done that), or just not getting to the bank right away.

Mobile deposits are convenient and secure. They've been widely used for about 10 years now.

Mobile deposits have worked well for me on all my platforms (local banks & CUs, Vanguard, etc.) The main advantage is that the mobile deposit hits your account immediately. With a large check, your dollars can be in a high yielding Vanguard MM fund the the same/next day (usually available to trade, but not to withdrawn until cleared).

I've had instances where my local CU held on to a large deposit in a low yielding checking account for weeks before I could move it over to Vanguard. Then I had to remember to make the transfer to Vanguard when the funds are finally released by the CU.

None of that anymore for me! The Vanguard mobile app works very well for mobile deposits.

One suggestion is to make the mobile deposit, but keep the check for 2 weeks or so. I usually write my deposit date on the check in pencil, and put it in my mobile deposit "pile". When I know the check has cleared (note - I've not had a mobile deposit issue with any financial institution), I shred my deposited pile once in a while. You can also just keep the deposited checks as your "receipts".
