Locally, I can order a taxi with a web browser just as easily as requesting an Uber with an app. It then texts me a link to a web page that shows the dispatched cab's position on a map in real time as it travels to pick me up. When the cab shows up, I can change my plan and go to a different destination, even during the route. I can even abort midway and only pay the meter up to that point. And the funds paid stay in the local economy (with the taxi company I use).To each their own, as I'm not bothered by the concerns you raise, and I'd select rideshare over taxi even if the price were identical.
