Not a hospital, but a nursing home. Not me, but a friend. His wife was receiiving substandard treatment and wanted to go home. He put her in a wheelchair and wheeled her to the car. When they said he couldn't take her without the doctor's permission, he told them he was the doctor. This is not actually a thing. Adults have the right to walk out at any time no matter what. I have done it, when critically ill and receiving substandard care. I literally ripped out my NG tube myself (while starting the mf’er DR in the face), yanked my IV, grabbed my bag, put my hands out in front of me pushing the (absolutely awful and abusive) DR away, told him “do not touch me!!” and to “go f!ck yourself” and kept walking. Nurses said things; doctor said things; I just kept walking. I’d been under his care for many hours at that point, but the time from my “go f!ck yourself” and being on the road was under 5 minutes. I literally didn’t stop walking.Let's suppose that you're hospitalized and the doctors say that they won't release you to your own home or even to a family member's home, but only to assisted living. What's your plan to end your life at that point?why would you want to prolong your life when you are mostly sitting at home (best case) by yourself with minimum interaction.
Didn’t sign any forms, didn’t answer any more questions. Got in the passenger seat and my husband drove me 300 miles to a different (world class) hospital, where I ultimately got better and was discharged some days later, no longer critically ill.
I’ve learned a few things about our medical system the hard way, and one important one for all of us to remember is that the patient doesn’t give up their bodily autonomy by entering into the care of a provider.
