Personal Consumer Issues • Re: Costco rotisserie chicken

Although we've been Costco members for ages, it was only about five years ago that we got around to trying the rotisserie chicken. It was just easier to get rotisserie chickens from a nearby supermarket or a local Boston Market (RIP). And, this will sound utterly stupid, but being a prepared food sold hot, I expected to see it in the store location with the hot dogs and pizza, and literally did not know they had them until I read some online raving about them.

We happen to think they're good. And definitely bigger than most? all? supermarkets. The Costco chickens are (marked) 3 pounds, the supermarkets 2 to 2.5 pounds. But we don't get them that often, because it's sort of pointless not to serve them hot, directly from the store, so it's a special trip.

Recently, we moved, and currently the nearest Costco is 5 miles away but over a nightmare stressful trafficky route while the nearest BJ's is 2 miles away and a low-stress drive. The BJ's rotisserie chickens are (marked) 3 pounds, and our opinion is that they are virtually identical and just as good. (They're branded both BJ's and Perdue). As I write this, they still are using clamshell packaging.

I don't "get" the complaints about "fluffy" consistency, unless it's just that they are very well-done. Costco has its very own chicken farms, in fact they run a fully vertically integrated operation, just to supply rotisserie chickens, so, yeah, it's possible that they have some special customized breed. We have not and are not going to bother to get rotisserie chickens from both BJ's and Costco to do any comparison taste test.
I prefer BJ's chicken. Not as salty as Costco.
