Personal Consumer Issues • Re: Placement of Refrigerators with Flammable Refrigerants in Your Kitchen

I would definitely keep me fridge out of the sun and away from stoves and heating vents because it will run more efficiently that way, but as far as fire risk, I would worry a lot more about my gas appliances and piping. Even if something happened to the fridge, most kitchens don’t have a lot in them that’s flammable, and the fire would likely burn itself out before catching anything else.

The risk from the fridge is not zero, though. I had a friend whose fridge did catch fire for exactly this reason. The leak and fire were on the inside of the fridge, and it put itself out, either because it ran out of fuel, or ran out of oxygen. She had no clue until she opened the door and everything on the inside of the fridge was black. Then she had a nine month long fight with LG to get them to honor the warranty.
