Good question OP. No single answer...but here's a short list of the main philosophies:

- Uber Bogle: BND and be done with it

- Uber Bogle and demonstrably (though only slightly) better performance data: Intermediate Term Treasury Fund (VGIT or similar)

- The hedge both side of inflation equation: 50/50 Intermediate Treasury and Intermediate TIPS funds

- Liability Matching: Build your own TIPS ladder for X number of years

Now for sure, since this is the BH board, there are several billion posts discussing every possible bond angle. However, the above is an ultra abbreviated synopsis of the main approaches. I think any of the above are good options and given they are all in the same duration area the performance isn't going to be hugely different. How you dial your asset allocation percentages will matter a whole lot more.
