This VA's rules on it: https://www.vdot.virginia.gov/media/vdo ... elines.pdf
My mail post was painted with stripes and had reflectors. But a plow will knock down most things. I once asked the county about what happens if the plow hits the fire hydrant in front of the house. I was told they were designed to break off well below ground level so there is no geyser.
Note: "non‐limited access highway systems" means a public road, not an interstate. (Code of VA § 33.2-100. Definitions.)
Personally, I would not want a mailbox a person could just lift and take. The one at HD appears as if a plow would just crush it.
