Identify what airlines and hotels you may use the most and, at minimum, get credit cards affiliated with those programs. Use those cards when paying for those services.

It costs very little (typical annual fee $100) and very easily breaks even. You dont need to do much scheming/gaming/optimization to get net positive value from them.

42 days of staying in a hotel chain is a fair amount of spend which compounds with status (earned by stay and/or through credit card) and will yield a large chunk of points. You can redeem free nights from them, or get room upgrades with club/lounge access, which is a neat perk for drinks or snacks.

3-4 trips do not get you much in the airline world, unless those trips are international. Accruing them to a foreign carrier's program can give you access to affiliated domestic lounges because you count as an international traveler. For example, if you have Star Alliance Gold membership from Lufthansa, you can use United lounges when flying United from Denver to Houston.
