From my experience, one dead, decaying mouse does not produce too much of an odor. It will eventually go away.
My mice seem to be able to eat the peanut butter off of 2 or 3 traps before the subsequent trap gets it. I guess they get full and slow down or drowsy and careless. I have had better success with cheese. I use the inexpensive Victor old-style wooden traps. I keep them set in the garage as soon as it gets cold. My DW mans the ones in the basement. We have a lot of natural areas around our house.
