The counselers aren't good at math and don't understand the process and have internalized the message that EVERYONE has to fill it out or the financial aid fairy won't visit their house. It can be awkward to explain how you know you won't get any aid, but you know your income and assets well enough to figure it out.We elected not to complete FAFSA. We were not going to take out any student loans and were certain we would not receive anything. Our children's guidance counselors were adamant that we needed to do so and were ridiculously relentless with hounding our kids that they HAD TO. We told them to ignore her. Although we have no concrete proof, the pressure to complete it led us to believe it really was for another purpose.
So many of their peers' parents paid people to complete it for them. Every one that we know received ZERO.
