My friend just wanted to get rid of it and was going to sell it to CarMax but he had to delete his late mother's name from the title and was delayed as this was during late 2021. I told him I'd buy it for the $1k. Part of him didn't want to sell it to me in case it broke down afterwards but I said I knew what I was getting into with such a purchase. He did warn me that I should get the $1k timing belt done since it was overdue.Yep. Somehow my response didn’t go through right, but I had a 2005 Mazda3, low mileage, Blue Book about $4k, that Carmax offered me $379 for. My brother heard that and offered me $380. With zero effort, I sold it to my gardener’s wife for $3k.
From what I understand, Old cars they send right to auction rather than sell themselves so they don't offer that much. This is in contrast to a newer male where they plan on being able to make a lot from it in markup and from financing. For example, my friend was getting rid of a clunker TL with 270k or so miles and CarMax offered him $1k and Carvana $300 (this was in 2022).
I ended up buying it in early 2022 after he got the title fixed. It worked out for me. The car is still running now with 308k miles. I put some money into it but I have saved a lot versus having to buy another car.
